Buying The Right Running Shoes

Wearing proper shoes for different types of running is vital. There are three different types of shoes that should be worn. For easy days and long runs, daily trainers work fine. For tempo runs, hill workouts, and races longer than 10k light weight trainers are the best choice. For track workouts and races shorter than 10k racing flats work great.

Daily trainers are the shoes that you will run the most mileage in. Make sure that your daily trainers are comfortable. I believe that all shoes should be comfortable right out of the box. The daily trainers that I wear fit so great that I am not afraid to run a 20 miler the first time I wear them. Shoes that need to be broke in are probably not the right type of shoe for your feet. Find out what type of foot that you have and then only purchase shoes that fall into that category.

Light weight trainers are great shoes for faster paced training. For tempo runs and hill workouts light weight trainers are the ticket. Light weight trainers have adequate cushioning and support to protect your feet and still are light enough for faster paced running. Be careful when buying light weight trainers. Make sure that you purchase the correct type for your type of feet.

Another great thing about light weight trainers is that they are light enough and stable enough for longer races. I personally wear trainers for half and full marathons. My own experience has been that my feet never hurt after half marathons, finishing a full marathon everything hurts. I would still recommend wearing light weight trainers for these race distances.

Racing flats are very light weight, usually less than 9 0z. Be careful with racing flats, finding the correct fit is extremely important. Don’t always purchase the lightest pair that you can find. I prefer racing flats with some support and cushioning. A few ounces of cushion and support are always better than becoming injured just to save 10 or 15 seconds in a 5k.

I personally would not recommend wearing racing flats in races longer than 10k. I have worn racing flats in a couple of half marathons and my feet were sore for days afterwards. Since I have worn light weight trainers exclusively my feet never hurt afterwards.

The most popular time to wear racing flats is during track workouts. The feeling of wearing light weight shoes during fast paced workouts is what makes racing flats so popular. I personally like to wear racing flats during all of my track workouts. There are others who wear racing flats only for a race. Choose which time works best for you.


There is a lot of discussion surrounding a person’s body weight and shoe selection. I am 6’1 and weigh 180lbs, so being a larger runner I still wearing light weight trainers and racing flats. I would recommend that each person decide for themselves if they want to wear lighter shoes.

Men’s Running Shoes

Men and women have many differences and shoes are just one of them. A woman’s shoe isn’t merely a smaller version of man’s shoe. The design is different to allow for differences in the shape of the foot and weight applied to the heel.

Men’s running shoes are generally stiffer than women’s shoes. This allows for more support and motion control whereas women’s shoes tend to be a little more flexible.

For a long time, running shoe manufacturers specialized mainly in the construction of men’s running shoes and basically build scaled down versions for women.

In recent years however, many manufacturers have taken to designing running shoes specifically for women which take into consideration the differences in the build of women’s feet.

Since men of the same height tend to weigh more than women, men’s running shoes are designed to be tougher and have more cushioning in the sole to absorb the pounding caused by the additional weight.

The heels are typically designed to absorb shock of greater intensity. These extra features tend to make the shoe stiffer which adds additional support for the male foot, but which can make it hard for a female to move and flex naturally while wearing.

In general, the male foot has a broader forefoot than a woman’s. The female foot tends toward being angular.

People have different approach of choosing what they think is best running shoes. But what are the things that should we really consider when buying a pair of running shoes. Stereotypically, we have the notion that the latest, hottest and most expensive foot gear is what we should be wearing since it is, in fact, the coolest. But there are some things that we need to consider before we grab ourselves the best pair that will not only fit comfortably, but at the same time, benefit us in the long run (literally).

Foot type

As a whole, people of all walks of life have different feet types. In other words, its the different bone structures of the feet. This leads to the way we walk, stride and run. The most common among the human population is flat footed people. It is also called the pronated type of feet. It means that the medial bones of the foot tend to go inward then downward and when walking, the foot comes down on its margin. These foot type need extra support on the medial arch. The second most common feet type is the high arched type. People with this type of feet walks from the outside going to the inside and they don’t have any problem with their stride. If you belong to this group, cushioned running shoes is best for your feet

The last feet type is the normal type. It lands just outside of the heel and finishing off slightly inward. This type is also known as the better runner. They have more control with their stride. Unfortunately, only a very small number of people have this feet type. Best fit of running shoes are those with cushion and supports the medial arch.

Purpose

You have to bear in mind the purpose of buying a pair of running shoes. For whatever reason, a definite ground in buying a new pair is when the soles of your shoes already have worn out. The duration of a pair of shoes for normal runners who frequently use their running shoes everyday is six months, if it’s more than six months, invest on a new one. An old pair of runner shoes doesn’t benefit your feet and support your bodyweight properly any longer, so it’s advisable to change them.

Price

A pair of running shoes comes with numbers. And those numbers are in dollars. Try to select a pair of shoes that fits you properly and comfortably without ruining your budget. Look for shoes that has exactly what you need, both the cost and the efficiency and ask yourself if it can last six months or so of running, jogging, walking, day in and out, rainy or sunny season.

By using running shoes, you can avoid yourself from injury.

And, it is better to have two pairs of shoes instead of one. That way, in wet weather you will have a dry pair waiting.

If you plan to buy a pair of running shoes, do it at the end of the day. By that time, your feet are a bit puffy. This is necessary because normally, running cause your feet to expand.

Also, try those shoes on both your feet. Feel them. Check out if they are comfortable enough.

The best time to replace your old running shoes is after about 350-400 miles or after one whole year of use.
